The fuel type will be on the boiler. If it's very old, take a look at the pipes. If there's a small pipe coming out of the bottom with a valve on it, it's likely to be gas.

Combi Boiler

A combi is a combined water and central heating boiler in one compact unit. There will be no separate hot water cylinder.

Standard Boiler

Conventional (sometimes referred to as traditional or standard) requires a separate hot water cylinder for storage.

System Boiler

A system boiler will require a separate hot water cylinder but no feed tanks in the loft. The boiler itself will have a water pressure gauge display as it is connected directly to mains water.

Back Boiler

A back boiler is situated behind the fireplace. They are no longer favoured and are replaced by one of the other types when they expire.

Combi boilers are extremely efficient, which allows you to heat both your home and your water quickly and efficiently as and when you need to. As there is no need to heat up an external hot water tank you can save money on your domestic energy bills if you choose a combi boiler.
